Picture the Music Website Launched

19th January 2006

Well, after three months of activity, we've finally got the website looking somewhat respectable.

We've tried to incorporate all the input we received, please let us know what you think.

Does it give you the information you need ?
Is it easy to find the information you need ?

We've still got a long way to go, especially in the community section where we have big plans...

Thanks for all your help.

Picture the Music Create in writing research

22nd March 2010

Picture the Music create is featured in a report released by the Esmee Fairbairn foundation called Writing Is Primary.
Writing is Primary - a report documenting a 15 month action research project on the teaching of writing in primary schools. It has been written for schools with head teachers wanting to take action to improve the teaching of writing across their school, lead teachers eager to develop their subject knowledge and teaching staff who would like to see their pupils leave primary school with a deeper understanding and enjoyment of what writing can be for them and what it can do in the world beyond the classroom.

The findings of the team of schools showed that ' by stimulating emotions and imagination these approaches gave pupils a reason to write, motivating them to plan, plot and sequence, work on and improve a piece of writing through several drafts.'

The full report is attached to this news item.

A whole new world project - Nottingham - and more...

9th September 2011

Philip is preparing to lead an innovative project in Netherfield Primary school in Nottingham - in the words of Head Teacher Sharon Jackson the project aims to develop ' self confidence and creativity as two gateways to learning - The reasons for underperformance in literacy are complex and often include wider societal factors such as gender roles, family issues, behaviour issues, peer pressure and self stereotyping, as well as issues around teaching and learning practices. One factor, however, that stands out above all others when it comes to boys' and girls' learning, is MOTIVATION...so creating experiential opportunities that truly engage them is crucial.'

The project will involve each child in the school creating imaginary worlds. There will eventually be six lands with a lake at their centre.

Philip will be working with every class in the school - Reception up to yr 6. Each class will experience sounds ( specially composed by Philip for the project ) and images of 7 landscapes - one for each Year group. Each yr group will produce writing and drawings of 'their' land. It is from these ideas that characters will emerge and the world will take shape.

Working alongside a chainsaw sculptor, forest worker, broadcaster and a public speaker - as well as the committed staff and parents at the school the 'world' will be built in the playground - with coracles for the lake and willow houses to live in.

Throughout the course of the project presentations will be made, a newspaper run and podcasts produced to report on progress and encourage the children to develop their ideas with others.

Philip will be keeping a blog with his thoughts of the project as it develops. The whole thing starts on the 26th Sept. To read the blog go to [www.picturethemusic.com]
