National strategy objective:
T11 year 1 term 1.
Make simple story books.
Picture:
Alien
Music:
35 beeps and things

Notes

In this lesson the children will see 2 pictures and hear 2 sounds associated with each picture to build a very simple story which can then be made into a book.

They need to be familiar with the 5 point Narrative planning map.

Each branch of the map can be made into a blank page of a book, 5 pages long. On each of these pages the children will write down their ideas.

They are going to see the opening and the build up.

Show them the first picture of the alien and play the music. Ask questions to get ideas:

  • What is it doing?
  • How is it moving?
  • What can you see?

Once ideas have been established see if they can come up with simple sentences to describe what they see and hear.

Now move on to the next picture. Play the music.

Ask questions again:

  • Where is the alien going?
  • Why is the alien on this bridge?

They will then fill in what happens:

  • What was the problem in the story?
  • How was it sorted out?
  • How did the story end?

These can be very simple ideas and sentences. the whole ‘story’ can be 5 sentences long if necessary.

It is good to do this with the whole class to get ideas.

Model putting these ideas on the narrative planning map.

Get the children to talk about their ideas and share them. You will find some interesting discussions arising

  • Where did the alien come from?
  • Why was the alien walking across the bridge?
  • Was there anyone with the alien?
  • What was making the beeping noise?

OUTCOMES

  • They have made a simple story book
  • They have seen narrative structure
  • They have looked and listened carefully
  • They have experimented with words
  • They have shared their work and ideas
