Examples / Lessons / Year 2

National strategy objective:
T15 year 2 term 2.
Write own poems from initial jottings and words.
Picture:
Tower
Music:
45 solar wind & 56 waves

Notes

In this idea the children will create a 2 verse poem using prepositions as a starting point.

They will map their ideas on the 5 point Narrative planning map.

The picture is of a tower. The first verse will be about the ideas they have about outside the tower – ie the tower itself and the atmosphere around it. The tune to go with this verse is quite spooky and atmospheric.

The children need to understand that their ideas will come from what they see and what they hear.

Once they have generated their ideas for the first verse they construct the poem.

You could give them scaffold lines like:

  • Outside the Tower I saw
  • Outside the Tower I heard
  • Outside the Tower I felt

In the same session, or the next day, move onto the next tune. This is the sound of waves.

Explain that this is what they see inside the Tower.

Play the sound while the children are looking at the picture.

They generate ideas and organise them on the maps.

Share them with the class.

It may be necessary to model how to organise the ideas on the map (see thought map tutorial for more information).

They then write the second verse of the poem. Give them scaffold lines if needed. You can focus on adjectives, metaphors, similes, adverbs, anything!
